Reed 01.10 Creating Silence

BY DANIEL COMP | JANUARY 22, 2023

In music, a 'hook' is an intentionally addictive set of lyrics and beat. It sticks in our mind and plays over and over and over... It can be maddening. It's a fabulous thing to be able to get noise out of your head and be inside a place that is quiet. That is... WHEN you have cleared out all the emotional clutter, baggage and 'hooks'. What can be done to stop the noise, the filler, the displacement of our own inner voice?

"I learned of a skill called 'listening in the gap' from Treena Kerr, wife of Graham Kerr, of "The Galloping Gourmet" who I used to work with. Depending on where you go for the statistic, it is said that our brains can process between 400 and 600 words per minute, but only speak about 125 words per minute. At this rate of spoken wpm, our brains are working a lot faster! This disparity or 'gap' is what Treena was referring to, the gap between what is going in and what you can deal with. That's at least 3 to 4 hundred wpm!"

"That's an incredible opportunity to seize the attention that YOU have full control over. No one else can take that away from you. It's a fabulous thing to be able to get noise out of your head and go somewhere that is quiet. Because you can get in touch with all of those EXTRA WORDS THAT YOU HAVE! All of that extra processing. You can get in touch with what's going on down here (motioning to heart, chest)... this pathway of intuition and understanding and feelings and awareness and soaking in the 'gestalt' of it all. Just being."

"A dear friend who passed away several years ago, Bob Moab, used to say 'It's curious they call us human BEINGS, not human DOINGS.' And while your being... (aware), there's so much that you might aim your attention at, that abundance of processing in your mind!"

"One of the tools we're gonna give you, in probably the shortest lesson that I have.. some call it meditation, some call it just being at peace, being still."

"One of the quickest ways that I know of in getting one of those musical hooks out of your brain, you know, the jingle that just won't leave you alone? One of the tips I have that I use to get rid of that noise is to listen.. listen to your own lungs. Go some place, just sit.. and listen to your breathing."

"Take control of the gap between what's coming in and what you can process. Take control of that. You have abundant access and abundant processing and abundant intelligence. You have all of those things, and much more to put it use in changing your destiny. It's a great tool."

Key Points

  • Your brain has an abundant and overlooked capacity
  • Your brain and 'gut' are connected and symbiotic
  • Silence makes it possible to harmonize or synchronize the two

WDWDWWD?

  1. Work on becoming aware of the noise in your head
  2. Reduce the noise with focused breathing awareness
  3. Give yourself permission to take time-outs and noise reduction 'diffuse' time
